How to Grow, Harvest, Store and Cook Beans | The Diet of the Future
Susan Young, author of 'Growing Beans' gives a masterclass in growing protein-packed beans!
In the UK, we mostly grow beans for fresh green pods, but there is a whole world of flavoursome and nutritious beans out there, that provide food all winter.
Beans can play a role in reducing the risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease and cancer – they are good sources of protein, fibre, folate, iron and potassium – and they can reduce your carbon footprint and food miles as well!
Susan grows a wide range of beans in her English-Welsh border garden, mostly for eating at the bean stage, rather than the pod, and here she shares her favourite varieties, how best to grow them, best methods for harvesting and storing and her favourite recipes.
Susan also explains landraces, the difference between beans and pulses and how she started collecting beans from around the world.
She also talks about flatulence and shares her tips for reducing this when eating your own tasty beans.
