Latin American Spanish: Tú vs. Vos (part 1)
One of the most interesting features of Latin American dialectology is the use of vos in place of tú. Since voseo usually isn’t taught in Spanish classes, most Spanish students have never even heard of it. This is a potentially unfortunate situation for someone who has taken Spanish classes and who wants to study, work, or live in one of the countries in Latin America where voseo is used. What it means is that Spanish learners who want to go to one of those countries have a little more work to do in order to get up to speed with the local variety of Spanish. These two videos on Latin American voseo are my contribution to correcting this situation and helping interested students learn about the topic. In this first video we will discuss where voseo comes from; what it means; and which regions of Latin America use it. In the second video we’ll discuss the grammar of voseo; how to use it properly; how to conjugate verbs in voseo; and the important regional variations of voseo.
