Porsche Taycan Gains 160 Miles of Range in Just 30 Minutes

Since its debut in 2020, Porsche has sold over 75,000 of its all-electric Taycan sedan, Sport, and Cross Turismo waggons worldwide. For a brief period, it appeared that its EV would outsell the brand's crown jewel 911 in the United States, but sales of the Taycan behind those of one of our favourite sports cars by 726 units six months into 2022. Porsche has disclosed 2023 Taycan pricing and changes that will affect Taycans sold three years ago, with plenty of time to bridge the gap.

Porsche says it has updated the cooling and heating strategy for the Taycan's 71.0-kWh and 83.7-kWh batteries, as it did last year, to allow for faster and higher temperature preconditioning. As a result, the battery is ready to reach its maximum charging speed of 270 kW at a higher state of charge. This means that, rather than having the peak available only between charge levels of 5 to 15%, even if charging begins at 30%, the car's 800-volt architecture allows for DC fast-charging speeds of up to 270 kW. This charging functionality, according to Porsche, will be offered as a free update to current Taycan owners.

In theory, attaining the maximum charging speed more frequently and quickly should cut charging times in half, and Porsche claims that the 2023 Taycan gains 50 kilometres (31 miles) in overall range when evaluated using Europe's WLTP test standard. This is due to the most recent software updates, which feature the ability to turn off the front motor in Dual-motor Normal and Range modes.

The EPA numbers for the 2023 Taycan aren't yet available, but based on current WLTP and EPA estimations, the farthest-driving Taycan 4S Performance Battery Plus model received a 254-mile WLTP rating and a 227-mile EPA estimate in the United States. According to the EPA, this means the Taycan's maximum range might be as much as 250 miles.
The advancements do not stop there. Taycans will have enhanced PCM 6.0 infotainment software, a revised and more colourful user interface, and wireless Android Auto starting in 2023. This will be a free update for current Taycan owners, but it will require a visit to a Porsche service centre and could take up to a day to complete. With the upgraded PCM 6.0, drivers will be able to filter charging stations by power output, allowing them to prioritise the fastest chargers nearby.
With the exception of the fully-painted 19-inch Aero wheels, the new Porsche will be equipped similarly to the previous model. Those are no longer available, but the polished and painted 19-inch Aero wheels are still available. Variable Light Control, which allows the driver to electronically alter the roof from clear to opaque, is now available on all Taycans with panoramic glass roofs. Porsche now includes a wiring harness for optional front and rear Porsche Tequipment safety cameras as part of the dashcam preparation process.
The 2023 Porsche Taycan configurator is now open, with prices beginning at $88,150 for the sedan and $99,150 for the Taycan Cross Turismo waggon.
