The Montessori Geometry Cabinet: The Triangle Drawer Triangles by Sides

In this lesson we demonstrate how to use the Montessori Geometry Cabinet Triangle Drawer to classify triangles by sides. We use the Geometry shape puzzle for this demonstration giving you an alternate material to use if you don't have the cabinet and drawers. This lesson benefits teachers with both materials.

In this lesson
-Identify and define the 3 types of triangles by sides
-Use a Montessori 3-Period lesson structure
-Invite children to explore deeper with lesson follow up options

You could spend more time than I did on the 3rd Period of the lesson asking:
-What is the name of a 2-sided triangle? (isosceles)
-What is an equilateral triangle? (a triangle with 3 equal sides)
-What is an isosceles triangle? (a triangle with 2 equal sides)
-What is the name of a triangle with no equal sides (scalene)
You could also play a mystery game with the shapes by hiding some or mixing them up and asking students to identify and define them as a way of assessing recall in the 3rd period of the lesson.
