Who's that dog breed! #4

Stats

Yorkshire Terrier

Liver Shunt (Portosystemic Shunt) → Yorkies are one of the most predisposed breeds. Congenital shunts reported in up to 36% of cases across all dogs presented with shunts, Yorkies disproportionately represented. Causes poor growth, neuro signs, and GI issues.
Cost: $2,000–5,000 for surgery; $500–1,500/year for medical management if untreated surgically.

Pancreatitis → Small/toy breeds like Yorkies are overrepresented in pancreatitis cases. Prevalence in dogs overall ~1–2% in referral studies, but higher in predisposed breeds. Triggered by high-fat meals.
Cost: $1,000–3,000 per ER episode in California.

Dental Disease & Retained Baby Teeth → By 37 weeks, 98% of Yorkies had some signs of periodontal disease in one study; ~69% had at least one retained deciduous tooth. Severe dental disease leads to extractions and bone loss.
Cost: $1,500–2,500+ for dental cleaning + extractions in Southern California.

Collapsing Trachea → Common toy-breed disorder; prevalence estimated around 5% of small breeds. Leads to the hallmark “honking” cough and exercise intolerance.
Cost: $300–800/year for lifelong medical management (weight loss, meds, harness).

Patellar Luxation → Toy breeds are disproportionately affected; Yorkies among the top predisposed. Prevalence ~2–3% of all dogs, but up to 6–8% in small/toy breeds.
Cost: $1,000–4,000 per knee for surgical correction; mild cases managed conservatively.
