Deciphering Chords. Chords and chord names explained from first principles.

For a violinist/fiddle player, understanding chords can be a challenge, as we tend to think about melody rather than harmony, and chords are not laid out in a natural way on our instrument.

In this video I explain the basics of chords and their names. I start with three note chords, explaining the difference between major and minor chords. I then move on to four note chords, explaining the different types of 7 chord; the major 7 chord, minor 7 chord, and dominant 7 chord.

I show the different chords made up from the different degrees of the C major scale, including all the above, plus the minor seven flat five, or half diminished. I briefly explain the relationship of Bm7b5 to E7b9. I then talk about diminished and slash chords. Guess what, I forgot augmented chords!

Finally I demonstrate a sequence which shows how a single note can run through a sequence, and explain that you don't always have to play the root or arpeggio of a chord.
