This is a universal joint. It's a beautifully simple mechanism that can be used to transmit rotation between two shafts that aren't axially aligned. Here's how it works. A U-shaped piece called a yoke is fixed to the end of each shaft.

The two yokes are connected together using a cross-shaped component consisting of two perpendicular bars with bearings placed at the ends of the bars. The bearings are pressed into the holes in the yokes, meaning that the yokes can rotate relative to one another, but only about certain axes. This allows the rotation of the first shaft to be transmitted to the second. The universal joint has many applications. It can be used in car power transmission systems, for example.
