The Day An Entire City Could Not Stop Dancing

In July 1518, the city of Strasbourg witnessed something terrifying.

A woman stepped into the square… and began to dance.

There was no music.
No celebration.
No reason.

Within days, dozens joined her.
Within weeks, hundreds were dancing uncontrollably beneath the burning summer sky. Shoes split. Feet bled. Bodies collapsed from exhaustion. Some never rose again.

Priests called it possession.
Doctors blamed overheated blood.
City leaders built a stage and hired musicians — believing the cure was more dancing.

It only made it worse.

Then, as suddenly as it began…

The dancing stopped.

To this day, historians still debate what caused the infamous Dancing Plague of 1518 — mass hysteria, ergot poisoning, stress, or something we still don’t understand.

This is one of the strangest events in human history.
