Greater Manchester Mayor and Labour candidate Andy Burnham was grilled on BBC Newsnight about the fiscal rules. He repeatedly sidestepped the question, declaring he was “not going to go through… an exam on the fiscal rules,” while confirming he would stick to them if he ever became Prime Minister. Despite being a senior Labour figure who clearly knows the rules (current budget balance by 2029/30 and falling public sector net financial liabilities as a share of GDP), Burnham chose evasion over a straightforward answer.
