The Rules of Byzantine Chess

The Rules of Byzantine or Circular Chess, Persia, from Muhammad ibn Mahmud Amuli's 'Treasury of the Sciences' (1325 CE)
This short video shows how the pieces move and how victory is achieved. It shows enough that you can learn to play this form of circular medieval chess.
The rules are similar to many forms of medieval chess. For example, the pieces move in the same manner as those in the variant of chess we have from King Alphonso X’s book of games about fifty years earlier and over six thousand kilometres away.
The author of these rules was a Persian physician who also wrote an encyclopaedia on the classification of knowledge as well as works on medicine. This translation relies on Murray’s A History of Chess, 1913 CE.
Amuli names the game as ‘Byzantine Chess’. It is not believed to have been a game from the Byzantine empire, though that myth is persistent, and I had heard of it many times.
I hope to face you across a round chessboard sometime.
