'Ukrainian forces destroy Russian targets' as fighting in Mariupol continues
Footage posted on Wednesday by the Azov Battalion, a far-right paramilitary group absorbed into the Ukrainian National Guard, reportedly shows explosions in Mariupol, where members of the regiment continue to fight Russian forces.
Storyful has not verified the date of recording, but confirmed it was filmed in south Mariupol, approximately just over half a mile from the coast.
The Azov Battalion said the video shows a strike on Russian military equipment. This has not been verified.
Russian Defense Ministry Spokesman, Major-General Igor Konashenkov, said on April 13, that over 1,000 Ukrainian troops, including 162 officers, had surrendered in Mariupol.
On April 14, Ukraine’s General Staff said fighting continued in the city as Russian carried out “assault operations”.
Among a number of completely or partially destroyed buildings and vehicles are still civilians who try to survive the war between Russia and Ukraine in the besieged city of Mariupol.
The city has been under the attack of Russian forces, which claimed that over 1,000 Ukrainian soldiers have recently surrendered.
According to Russian Defense Ministry, the country provides humanitarian corridors every day to evacuate civilians from Kharkiv and Mariupol.
Russia's war on Ukraine, which began on Feb. 24, has drawn international condemnation, led to financial sanctions on Moscow and spurred an exodus of global companies from Russia.
At least 1,842 civilians have been killed and 2,493 injured in Ukraine since Russia declared war on Feb. 24, according to UN estimates, with the true figure feared to be much higher.
Over 4.5 million Ukrainians have fled to other countries, with millions more internally displaced, according to the UN refugee agency.
