The U.S. just announced two major immigration changes: 📌 The State Department has paused all visa issuance for Afghan passport holders. 📌 USCIS has halted all asylum decisions until further notice. This means Afghan families abroad cannot receive visas, and all individuals with affirmative asylum cases inside the U.S. will not get decisions — even if they completed interviews or had decision pick-up appointments scheduled. Interviews may still happen, but no approvals will be issued. 🛑 At this time, this appears to apply to USCIS affirmative asylum cases, and not to immigration courts (defensive asylum), because EOIR has not issued any similar order so far. This is happening before the investigation into the D.C. shooting has even concluded — and yet an entire nationality is being punished for the alleged actions of one person. As an Afghan-American immigration attorney, I cannot overstate how devastating this is. Afghans are terrified and confused. Families who followed every rule are now trapped in limbo again. This move raises serious legal and constitutional questions and will almost certainly trigger federal lawsuits. Afghan applicants, as well as anyone else impacted by this should not disappear, should not give up, and should not self-deport. You still have rights. 💼 What you should do now: ✔️ Stay in touch with your attorney ✔️ Keep every USCIS notice ✔️ Document interviews and canceled appointments ✔️ Avoid international travel ✔️ Prepare for possible litigation ✔️ Stay informed #immigrationlaw #immigrants #asylum #usvisa #afghans
