Whose barn is it anyways? A debate over bird poop in a small New Hampshire town

Each spring, this barn becomes a temporary residence for dozens of barn swallows, who migrate from Central and South America to come feast on insects in the surrounding fields on New Hampshire’s seacoast.

In years past, the swallows have hatched and raised fledglings in nests throughout the rafters of the barn. The birds, though, have been evicted this year, after the local conservation commission voted to keep the barn’s windows closed this season.

Their reason? A couple dozen birds, over four months… The waste piles up.

The commission has constructed some alternative structures outside the barn, with hopes that the swallows might use them as a new place to nest. The birds have only just begun to arrive, so it will become clear soon whether they’re open to relocating.
