Permaculture Intercropping Vegetables in Niches - Creative Spaces

In this video we're looking at places in which to intercrop or interplant vegetables in unusual or creative spaces. Here we are intercropping squash and potatoes in amongst a young beech hedge. The beech hedge won't shade out the squash entirely, but will give them some protection from the wind. We are also trialing growing potatoes above ground in a mini raised bed.

*Permaculture Principles of Niches*
In permaculture, niches can be identified both in space and time. Here we're using a niche in space, where we're establishing a beech hedge, Currently the whips take up minimal space, but will grow year on year, meaning that the growing space for other plants will diminish, but at the moment we can fill that space with vegetable plants. Growing the vegetables here, means that we're adding nutrients to support them as they're annuals, but those nutrients will also be available to the young trees over a longer period of time as we're feeding the soil biota too.

They specialise in heirloom varieties and seeds all come with seed saving instructions. This is the only squash we grow, so our seeds now have become locally adapted.
