El donga es toda una ideología para los surma.
Tampoco se trata de un intercambio de golpes sin sentido, ni se busca voluntariamente infringir un daño irreparable al adversario.
Existe un código, y un árbitro que debe hacerlo cumplir en cada pelea. El objetivo será derrotar al contrario, para lo cual bastará con provocarle sangre en las piernas o forzar su rendición.
El bastón que se utiliza en la pelea se denomina "daguinéo", su extremo superior tiene forma fálica y se obtiene de las ramas de un árbol autóctono llamado kalochip.
Los días antes a la pelea, los luchadores se acercan al río. Allí, se pintan el cuerpo y se provocan el vómito repetidamente. Un ritual con el que los guerreros surma creen que se están liberando de todos sus miedos. Los arrojan en el río y las aguas se los llevan para siempre. Así, reúnen el valor necesario para afrontar del donga.
