Hiking the Arrowhead Loop Trail, Monte Sano State Park, Alabama

The Arrowhead Loop Trail is a 6.1 mile moderately trafficked loop trail in Monte Sano State Park, near Huntsville, Alabama. This is a moderate difficulty trail due to length and a steep up-hill section a little over halfway through. I’m hiking the loop in a counter-clockwise direction today starting at the parking lot off of Monte Sano Blvd just across from the entrance to the Burritt on the Mountain Museum. Most of the trail can be described as a lovely walk in the woods with with some interesting rock formations. Two highlights of this trail are a natural spring that has been damned into a cistern and the Natural Well which is a 185 ft deep vertical cave shaft that is open at the top surrounded by a fence so it is a little more challenging to fall in.

I had a beautiful day for a solo hike. The temperatures were warm and the skies mostly clear. It had rained hard a couple of days before, so there were quite a few muddy spots along the way. I stopped for lunch at a natural spring that fills a historic cistern providing a beautiful setting for relaxation. The big attraction on this hike though is probably the Natural Well. It is a huge vertical shaft, about 185 ft deep, with about 1000 ft of horizontal passages beyond that (for those brave enough to descend). I had the entrance to myself while I was there and spent quite a bit of time looking it over, but I'm not crazy enough to repel into it.
