15yr old driver dies during police chase crash

A 15-year-old is dead after a police chase that began in Wylie ended in a crash in Collin County Wednesday afternoon.

Wylie police say they responded to a domestic disturbance call at an apartment complex involving a mother and her 15-year-old son around 2:50 p.m.

Latonya Thompson was in her apartment near the corner of South Fifth Street and Oak Street when she heard her next-door neighbor yell for help.

“So I ran out here and I saw her coming toward me covered in blood,” she recalled. “She said, ‘My son has beaten me. He's hit me with a bat. He may have a gun.’ She didn't know. She was just very hysterical. Very frightened. Very scared for her life pretty much.”

Thompson and other neighbors called 911. Police found the mother bleeding from her head in the parking lot.

Shortly after, witnesses say they saw the woman's 15-year-old son drive off. Police, on the way there, passed him.

Wylie police found the son in his mom’s SUV, they tried to pull him over but he sped off. They began to chase the teen and notified Farmersville PD that he was heading their way on State Highway 78.

Police said the son in the SUV then drove over spike strips and kept driving about two more miles before he drove into oncoming crashing into a truck carrying porta-potties. He was killed in the crash. The driver was not seriously injured.

Police say the son hit his 40-year-old mom with a bat several times in the head, causing severe injuries. She was taken to Medical City Plano where she is in intensive care.

While neighbors say the boy was a good kid, they also say police have been called out to the home recently. Police say they have had past encounters with the 15-year-old, but didn't say much more. They also did not say whether the boy had a gun as neighbors heard from his mother.

The 15-year-old’s name has not been released at this time.

The investigation is ongoing and will be investigated by the Wylie Police Department and Farmersville Police Department.
