Woodturning 1: The river birch bowl

This is my 1st filmed project. I hope you enjoyed the video. I chose this piece of river birch because it was showing signs of spalting and nice grain formed while it was sitting in the wood-store during the summer months. The wood was obtained from a local tree surgeon and probably saved from a log splitter and a winter log burner!

Being a pretty odd shape I started out trying to remove some of the bark imperfections and the live edge 'cave' feature. But that would have removed a lot of the natural beauty of the piece so it stayed put. I think it worked out quite well; let me know what you think.

It wasn't the easiest piece of wood to turn. The grain structure changes throughout, from side to end grain and from soft 'punky' wood to hard knotty features. Also the wood was green (wet) and it kept drying and moving. The eagle eyed will have spotted that I left the centre in place after reversing the bowl and hollowed out as much wood as possible to reduce the weight hanging on the chuck. Let me know what you think.

Anyway thanks for watching. Subscribe and leave comments.
