Armenian President Armen Sarkissian called for Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and his government to resign or be dismissed over the PM's decision to sign a Russian-brokered agreement with Azerbaijan to cease hostilities in the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh, speaking in a televised address in Yerevan on Monday.

The president also called for snap parliamentary elections and the creation of a national unity government until the elections are held.

Thousands have taken to the streets in Yerevan and other Armenian cities in the past week to protest the Nagorno-Karabakh agreement.

Under the peace deal, Russian peacekeepers are to be deployed in the disputed region to monitor the agreement. The agreement also sees Azerbaijan obtaining control of the territory it has taken in the most recent fighting, and Armenia relinquishing control of further areas it has held since the Nagorno-Karabakh War in the 1990s.

*SOUNDBITES*

SOT, Armen Sarkissian, Armenian President (Armenian): "We lost the war, which was imposed on us both on the battle-field and diplomatic and international platforms."

SOT, Armen Sarkissian, Armenian President (Armenian): "The absolute majority of the discussion participants are united in one issue: resignation or dismissal of the prime minister in accordance with the Constitution, early parliamentary voting. Evidently, despite the ceasefire, the Republic of Artsakh [Nagorno-Karabakh], Republic of Armenia, and the whole Armenian nation are facing the period of new challenges, where every mistake can bring dire consequences."

SOT, Armen Sarkissian, Armenian President (Armenian): "In such a situation I want to address law enforcement services. Today you are responsible, first of all, for the order in our country, you have to be strong and decisive, but in every case, you have to remember that in front of you there are brothers and sisters. Every deviation, every violation of the law is unacceptable and inexcusable. I urge you to abide by the law and to protect the law and legitimacy." *MULTIPLE SHOTS AT SOURCE*

SOT, Armen Sarkissian, Armenian President (Armenian): "Dear fellow countrymen, my observations, which I got as a result of meetings and consultations, are as follows: considering the modern situation, and the high necessity to overcome it by respecting the needs of the public, evidently, that in order to avoid any disturbances in the country, early voting for National Assembly is inevitable. In this context, to my point of view, the only responsible approach can be an objective estimation of the potential of the government by the ruling political power in order to as soon as possible establish a roadmap, where time limits for the corresponding constitutional processes will be set. The authority will be delegated to the highly professional government of National Accord."
