Is Apple about to kill Docker Desktop on Mac? 💻🚀
If you develop on an Apple Silicon Mac, you already know the struggle. Docker Desktop works, but it is notoriously heavy, resource-hungry, and eats up your RAM by forcing all of your containers into one massive, shared Virtual Machine. Plus, for commercial use, you have to pay for it.
Apple just dropped a massive alternative.
They recently open-sourced their own container runtime, simply called Container (built on top of their new Swift package, Containerization). It is built from the ground up specifically for Apple Silicon, and it is completely free.
Here is why developers are ditching Docker for it:
⚡ Speed: Sub-second start times.
🔒 Security: Instead of one shared VM, Apple runs each container in its own individual, lightweight VM.
🌐 Networking: Every single container gets its own IP address. Say goodbye to endless port forwarding battles!
If you are running macOS 26 Tahoe on an M-series chip, you can drop Docker today. The commands are practically identical (container run, container pull), but the underlying engine is infinitely more efficient.
👇 Want to test Apple's native container tool for yourself? Comment APPLE below, and I will DM you the direct link to the trending GitHub repository!
