Building a Shed

Myself and a gang of volunteers from our church built five identical wood sheds 12 feet wide and 6 feet deep. Their purpose was for food and recycling collection around our church campus so we needed them to look a bit classier than a normal storage shed.
Our foundation or deck we framed with 2"x6" treated lumber and 3/4" treated plywood. Because we were placing the sheds in various places around our church campus we needed to spend time leveling them out by using various thicknesses of treated lumber. Then we strapped all those blocks securely to the deck with metal straps. Don't skimp on the deck. The really good decks you can purchase (Tuff Shed for example) have very sturdy decks.
When building the walls we used 2"x4" framing on 16" centers and sheeted them with 3/8" exterior CDX plywood. Because we needed them to be a little more attractive than a normal backyard shed we used a combination of wood and cement board siding . The wood siding we purchased is sold under the brand name of Windsor One and is a bit on the pricey side but it has a unique and classy look and is made from a high grade pine that comes pre-primed and in various dimensions. You could save yourself a lot of money by using t-111 siding from home depot. Give it a good paint job and it will last a long time. We used the same grade of material for our fascia and soffits.
The cement board is made by Hardie and it also comes in various finishes and looks. The one we chose is called "Fine Sand." It's a good choice if you really want the exterior to resist rot and termites but it is pretty heavy.
The roofing is corrugated metal that we screwed down over 5/8" OSB and "ProArmor" roofing paper and a metal drip edge. It’s important to use the proper screws for the metal roofing and not over tighten them or you will damage the seal. These screws come in different types one use for metal to metal and one for metal to wood. We used the metal to wood type.
Our doors we made up with the same wood siding as the walls which we glued and stapled down over and 5/8" OSB substrate. Then we hung them simply with heavy duty gate hinges and latches.
