The tanpura is traditionally used for riyaz and meditation, providing a continuous harmonic foundation for Indian classical music.

A standard tanpura generally has four strings:

• The second and third strings are called the jodi, as both are tuned to Sa.
• The fourth string is tuned to Kharaj Sa, the lower octave (Mandra Saptak) Sa.
• The first string is usually tuned to Pa.

If a raag has Pa varjit (omitted), the first string is tuned to Ma instead. Raags with minimal use of Pa may also use Ma tuning. If Pa is varjit and the raag uses Teevra Ma, then the string is tuned to Shuddha Ni.
