Should You Buy the Hyperkin Supa Retron HD 16-Bit Super NES & Super Famicom Clone Video Game System

In this video we take a look at the Hyperkin Supa Retron HD 16-bit Super Nintendo Entertainment System and Super Famicom clone system.

I'll be the first to admit I've had a luke-warm opinion of Hyperkin over the last 2 years. The Retron5 is what got me back into retro gaming but the Retron HD was rather disappointing in its performance, specifically the color pallet, poor audio quality and only including one controller. Now Hyperkin is back with their latest home console, the Supa Retron HD, and I going into it I didn't know what to expect.

Super Castlevania IV - 3:05 - 6:30
Joe & Mac Collection - 6:31 - 7:43
TMNT IV Turtles in Time - 7:44 - 10:26
Star Fox - 10:27 - 13:28
Super Mario RPG - 13:29 - 14:49
New Japan Pro Wrestling '95 Tokyo Dome Battle 7 14:50 - 16:51
Super Star Wars w/Game Genie - 16:52 - 19:34

The video quality on the Supa Retron HD is a little hit and miss. On Star Fox I thought the video looked pretty decent and sharp. On Turtles in Time however the turtle sprites were blurry and smudged looking. Other games also had this smudged look including Super Mario All Stars and Super Star Wars, just to name two. I am attributing this to the choice in color pallet but it could be any of a number of things.

Audio seemed really good, I'd say it is one of the strong points of the Supa Retron HD. The audio was pretty crisp, in stereo and didn't seem to be over driven. Super Gameboy games sounded much better on this than the Retro-bit Super Retro Trio +, but that's going to be a part of a different video.

Why it RoX:
- Audio seems to be quite good
- 2 controllers included and they're pretty awesome
- Great styling
- Nice pin connectors
- Includes everything in the box to play
- Played everything I threw at it
- 4:3 and 16:9 switch
- Plays both NTSC and PAL games

What could be improved?
- It is overpriced compared to what else is on the market
- Color pallet seems to be inconsistent
- Controller cords could be longer
- Your games need to be very clean to play
- I could not pull off the gap-jump in Super Mario Bros level 8-2 at ALL with this system, a sign of potential lag or latency issues

Should you buy one?
This one is a hard sell for me really. At $20 more than the Gamerz Tek 8-bit HD or only $10 less than the Retro-bit Super Retro Trio+ the value is just hard to justify for me. Where it is priced you would expect it to nail down sound and video but the inconsistency in the video is quite disappointing. I'm also confused looking at Hyperkin's website where they indicate the included controllers have a 10-foot long cable. Mine surely were not that long, maybe 6-feet at most. I think some of Hyperkin's recent releases have disappointed as of late, the Retron HD being high on that list for me personally. The Supa Retron HD does a lot of things right, I just hope that Hyperkin continues to work to improve their quality and performance while reducing costs. I am optimistic that the price will come down to where it should be, it just may take some time.
