Mat Salleh the Macaque Monkey Plucking Coconut 1

Pig tailed Macaques (Monkeys) are trained by the village folks in Terengganu and Kelantan in Malaysia to pluck coconuts within the village vicinity. Earlier they were snatched from the wild when young and trained to be good at harvesting coconuts sometimes harvesting some 800 coconuts in a day.
But now they are a dwindling 'community' and used only to bring down old coconuts that could be a danger to the kids playing under these tall trees.

On our way to the Paradise Islands of Perhentian or Redang or Lang Tengah we stop by to watch them pluck coconuts and have a sit and drink young coconut water with the adorable primates. Soon this activity will be a thing of the past as the handlers are aged and no takers.
