Old Growth Pacific Coastal Redwood Salvage Table

Turning an ancient slab of old growth California Redwood into a beautiful little minimalist table.

June of 2017 we traveled to see the great California costal Redwoods. It has been a dream of mine to show those to Shay while he can still be enthralled with the majesty of the experience. One thing that Shay had been talking about the whole trip was to see a redwood sawmill. Outside of Crescent City California we had driven past a shake and shingle mill so armed with only a box of doughnuts we blocked their driveway with the camper and asked for a tour. Pacific Redwood Products were fantastic and took us through the entire mill, explaining how all the equipment worked, where it had come from and how long it had been in use. Afterward they took us through the yard to see some of the huge salvaged timbers they have saved. The man in charge then took Shay up to their waste wood pile and told him he could have any piece he could lift. Shay was... determined and this is what we built.

Building questions:

Why did you scrape and wipe off the epoxy from the table, that stuff is expensive!
-Well I hate the look. I hate the thick plastic look of a built epoxy finish but I like that epoxy soaks into the surface of soft or compromised woods to harden and create a durable layer. Cake and eat it too. I brush on epoxy and let it soak in as long as I dare before scraping it off. I can then use that scraped but dirty epoxy to harden up the rotten wood on the backside where no one can see.

Rattle can finish! Are you stupid or something?
-Look it isn't like that is the real finish, the epoxy was. I just needed something to sit on the epoxy to block the UV light and prevent yellowing. Those can finishes have come a long way in the last few years. I gave it three coats of satin and it worked great, smooth with no pools or sags. If at any time I want to change it that stuff is an easy sand but in all honesty I like the look more than the poly I used to put on.

Are you killing trees?
-No. It was cut down 100 years ago. Can't un-don that but I can make something out of what was a waste product. It is like having a slab of treasure in our house.

Dear god, those legs?
-What? I think they looked fine. I removed them from a chair at the dump. The little adjustable feet gave me some flexibility when it came to leveling the table. Sure it is short but then it was build for a little boy. The wood was not stable enough to support say taller hairpin legs without creating a chunky base where all the legs are attached to a frame and the wood just sat on top. Also Shay was in a hurry.

I saw sanding and as we all know if you sand in anything less than a full hazmat get up the world catches cancer!
-I had the blower on so the table saw was acting like a sanding table. Works great. I escaped with only a sawdust bugger or two. Toughen up princess.

Any number of things where my choice would have been right and yours wrong so you are a bad human being and your mom should be ashamed.
-God bless youtube, you should try making videos on the rolling piles of crap that army trucks are.
Hey I wrote a book, a book about zombies. What can I say I love me a good zombie apocalypse story. You can get it on Kindle, check it out? I would love some feedback and maybe if you liked it could you help me out a leave a review? Thanks!
