Grief: Ron's Story about Dealing with Death of K-9 Dog

Transcript: Hello, I’d like to introduce myself. My name is Ron and I’m from the west coast. I want to tell you a story about when I lost a loved one. Uno was a good dog with me. I adopted her when she was 5 years old. Before that, she was a K-9 dog at the kennel where I worked previously. Uno was such a great dog, not only with me but also with my wife. She enjoyed traveling and she just loved everything – the beach, lake, going out to restaurants with us, flying in planes, taking the train or bus. All of that, she really enjoyed. Uno was always near me, whether I was sitting or talking and standing somewhere. She would be there “protecting” me. I enjoyed that. I have a big heart for her. When Uno became sick, I had to take her to the hospital, where we found out that she had a tumor in her stomach. They told us that surgery to remove the tumor hopefully might help her get better and give her 1 or 2 more years. When they got the results of the bloodwork, however, they found that she had 95% blood cancer all over her body and wasn’t going to live much longer, maybe 2-3 more days. When we left the hospital, I felt like crying. I was upset and cranky, couldn’t sleep or eat anything. It helped that through counseling I had a list of things I could do to improve myself, like exercise, take time off from work, go on vacation. I still find myself thinking a lot about Uno sometimes, but part of life is accepting that sometimes you have to start a new part of your life. I want to feel that you understand what I went through in my life, and maybe you, too, can challenge yourself to relax and think positively. Thank you.
