As the world is stunned by another atrocious war conflict we all are asking ourselves: “how could it happen?”. The new single by paul small is a cinematic wail of despair that asks the same question through a story of an innocent child that becomes a cruel and brutal grownup corrupted by greed and power.

“From childhood we all are taught that the war is the worst thing that could ever happen. But some kids grow up and forget that crucial lesson. And after ages of pointless suffering and destruction we still find a reason to keep killing each other”
- says paul about the main idea behind the song. -
“The song was written in a desperate attempt to cope with the feeling of powerlessness. Seeing the news about what is going on makes you feel so small and useless in the face of such a catastrophe.”

Sonically the song paints an apocalyptic picture of a nuclear fallout. The scariest thing that could ever happen to humanity. Lo-fi bass guitar and static noise resemble a distress signal coming through radio waves, the only thing that may remain after the catastrophe. Chorus switches the soundscape to a cinematic mix of an orchestra with synths and sampled drums reflecting the tragedy of this horrifying possibility.

It’s almost impossible to pinpoint the genre of the song. You can hear alternative and emo influences in production and vocal melody but the beat and orchestra give it a cinematic pop flavour. The air raid siren joins the orchestra in the final chorus to give you a sense of an imminent danger. paul’s emotional vocal performance accompanied by this goosebump-inducing mix of organic and synthetic sounds is a true wail of despair.

“I had a chance to spend some time with Ukrainian refugee kids in the first week of the conflict. Together with ArtCor organization we tried to keep them busy and distracted. We spent a few hours together making music and having fun. Seeing these poor innocent souls I can’t imagine what is going on in their heads and hearts right now. Their parents are trying heroically to do everything to shield them from the horrors of war.

Moldova, home country of the artist, faces the biggest refugee crisis in it’s history right now. Tens of thousands of Ukrainians are leaving their houses in a hurry to find shelter in the neighbouring country. Seeing this, locals are trying their best to help them. Local musicians are organizing charity shows and even play on the street to collect donations in support of the refugees.
