What Makes Up Your Credit Score (FICO Breakdown)

Most people think a credit score is just one number.
It’s not.

Your FICO score is made up of several categories — each carrying a different amount of weight.

In this video, Justin Mirche breaks down the FICO “pie chart” and explains what actually impacts your score.

📊 Here’s how the scoring model is generally weighted:

💳 Payment History — 35%
The biggest category.
Late payments, collections, charge-offs, and judgments all affect this area.

📈 Credit Utilization — 30%
How much of your available credit you’re using.
High balances = higher risk.

🕒 Average Age of Accounts — 15%
Older accounts help establish stability and long-term credit management.

🔍 New Credit / Inquiries — 10%
Applying for new credit can slightly impact your score.

🏦 Credit Mix — 10%
A healthy mix of:
✔ Credit cards
✔ Auto loans
✔ Mortgages
✔ Installment accounts

…can strengthen your profile.

⚠️ One important thing to understand:
Just because inquiries are “10%” of your score does not mean pulling your credit drops your score by 10%.

These percentages are simply the weighting of the scoring categories inside the algorithm.

💡 The takeaway:
Your credit score isn’t based on one action.
It’s a combination of behaviors, patterns, and risk analysis over time.

That’s why building strong credit is about consistency — not shortcuts.
