Tarpon Springs, Florida - As Greek As It Gets

Tarpon Springs, Florida is as Greek as it gets. The town was settled by Greek immigrants in the latter part of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. They were drawn to the village because of their skill as fisherman and sponge divers. The town was once the world’s largest producer of natural sponges. The industry is still here and so are the tourists drawn by the quaint picturesque Sponge Docks and historic downtown. Tarpon Springs has the largest percentage of citizens of Greek heritage of any place in North America. Every January 6th the Greek Orthodox Church in America makes Tarpon Springs the center of the Celebration of the Feast of Epiphany. The Archbishop blesses the water by throwing a cross into Spring Bayou and the boys of the Cathedral dive in to retrieve it. Tarpon Springs on Florida’s Gulf Coast is one of the most unique places in the world and well worth taking time for a visit.
