Why The Poor Don’t Deserve Your Pity | Fred Branson | TEDxOxford

In this thought-provoking talk Fred Branson, founder of award-winning charity Amantani, invites you to re-imagine the relationship between the world’s so-called poor and those in a position to help. It’s time, he suggests, to move away from pity and assumptions of cultural superiority, towards reciprocal connections based on respect and mutual understanding. In the groundbreaking Meet My World film campaign, Fred and the Amantani team have created an inspiring alternative… and it’s going global.

Fred Branson is the co-director of Amantani UK, established in 2007, as a charity, which works to improve the lives of Peruvian children. Since 2008, the charity has been working to bridge the gap between home and school for children living in Ccorca; a small Quechua district nestled high in the Andes of Southern Peru. They have established three Boarding Houses, which help over sixty children who used to walk up to four hours to get to school; this is time that they can now spend on improving their prospects for the future.

This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
