In the autumn of 1964, in Oregon, USA. Glenn Holland, a composer with lofty aspirations, took a job as a music teacher at a middle school to earn money and support his creative career. This was not his ideal choice, but a compromise forced by reality— the pressure of family life made him put aside his pursuit temporarily. On his first day of teaching at the school, students with poor music foundations gave him a big challenge: they played musical instruments out of tune, and had even never heard of the famous classical composer Bach. Holland’s confidence was greatly shaken, and Principal Jacobs also offered him constructive advice on several occasions.
When Holland encountered setbacks in his work, his wife, who worked in photography, always stayed by his side to comfort and console him patiently; his good friend and PE teacher Bill Meister also used his years of teaching experience to tell him that educating students requires selfless care and sufficient patience. Under Holland’s dedicated guidance, Gertrude Lang, a white student, and Louis Russ, a Black student—both of whom knew nothing about music at first—learned to play the clarinet and bass drum respectively.
Just as Holland gradually devoted himself to teaching, his son was born, only to be diagnosed with congenital deafness. This blow shifted Holland’s focus to his family. During a period of negativity and confusion, he developed a vague affection for Luvena Morgan, an outstanding female student. His wife noticed the change in her husband but chose to be tolerant in silence. Later, when Morgan went to New York for further studies, Holland devoted all his energy to his son and teaching, and his relationship with his wife was restored.
Over the next 30 years, Holland not only improved his students’ musical literacy but also won everyone’s respect and affection with love, trust and understanding. When he retired, former students full of gratitude gathered together to hold a grand farewell party for him. The orchestra played the passionate and heroic American Symphony, paying the highest respect to this respectable teacher.#movie #shorts
