Basics of Cryptology – Part 16 (Modern Cryptography – The Avalanche Effect)

#cryptology, #cryptography, #cryptanalysis

In this video, we show the basics of cryptology (cryptology = cryptography and cryptanalysis).

This video here gives an introduction to the avalanche effect. "In cryptography, the avalanche effect is the desirable property of cryptographic algorithms, typically block ciphers and cryptographic hash functions, wherein if an input is changed slightly, the output changes significantly" (English Wikipedia). We have a look at a classic cipher (Vigenère), a modern encryption algorthm (AES), and a modern cryptographic hash function (SHA-256), with respect to their avalanche effect strengths. For that we use the hamming distance, which is the number of flipped bits between two binary strings. Finally, we have a look at a nice visualization of the effect in CrypTool 2 (with AES).
