IHB and NS Action at Dolton, Hammond, and East Chicago 6/06/21

First, we are at Dolton Junction. Dolton is one of the busiest rail junctions in the country and features a multitude of railroads. Originally, Dolton was home to a crossing between the Indiana Harbor Belt, Baltimore and Ohio Chicago Terminal, Chicago and Western Indiana, and Pennsylvania Railroad, along with a nearby Chicago and Eastern Illinois yard. Dolton now features IHB, CSX, Union Pacific, and Norfolk Southern trackage and features trains from Amtrak, Canadian Pacific, Chicago Fort Wayne and Eastern, Iowa Interstate, and several others.

Train 1: Marquette Rail SD40-2 3413 and Rapid City Pierre and Eastern GP38-3 2086 run light power down the IHB with Chicago Fort Wayne and Eastern train FWCH.

Train 2: An Indiana Harbor Belt light power move heads out of Union Pacific's Yard Center and down the IHB mainline with NS AC44C6Ms 4125 and 4072.

Now, we've moved to Hohman Avenue Junction in Hammond, Indiana. At one time, Hohman Avenue featured tracks from the IHB, Michigan Central, Monon, Erie, Chesapeake and Ohio, and Nickel Plate. Only the IHB and Norfolk Southern trackage remains, along with trains from Canadian Pacific, Chicago Fort Wayne and Eastern, Canadian National, and CSX.

Train 3: IHB SW1500 1516 runs light across the diamonds.

Train 4: Canadian National ET44AC 3175 and class unit SD70I 5600 pull out of IHB's Gibson Yard with a cut of autoracks.

Train 5: NS train 25A heads east down the NS Chicago District with NS DC to AC painted SD70ACC 1800, C40-9W 9519, and SD70ACe 1023. 25A consists of mixed freight and intermodal traffic for Chattanooga, TN.

We've moved again to CP 100 on the IHB Kankakee Line. CP 100 is located at the north end of IHB Michigan Avenue Yard and is the junction between the IHB Kankakee Line and IHB Cast Armor Lead. CP 100 also has a classic bracket signal.

Train 6: NS GP38-3 5809 pulls an IHB transfer out of Arcelor Mittal Indiana Harbor into Michigan Avenue Yard.

Train 7: NS ES44AC 8108 and AC44C6M 4234 pull a sand train toward the NS Chicago Line.

Train 8: IHB SW1500 1503 pulls a local down the CN's former EJ&E Whiting Branch.

Train 9: NS C40-9W 9515 and ES40DC 7516 lead NS train 35J toward IHB Blue Island Yard.

Train 10: NS SD40-2s 3455 and 3517 lead train B09 onto the NS Chicago Line. B09 is a daily steel train from Arcelor Mittal Indiana Harbor to I/N Tek Steel in New Carlisle, IN.

Our final location is Ivanhoe Junction in Gary, IN. Ivanhoe was the crossing of Elgin Joliet and Eastern, IHB, and Michigan Central. Ivanhoe was the site of the horrific 1918 circus train crash and following fire which killed 86 people and injured 127. Ivanhoe is said to be haunted by the circus performers and animals who lost their lives in the crash 104 years ago. Now, Ivanhoe is the junction of IHB, CSX, and Canadian National.

Train 11: IC SD70s 1002 and 1037, both in CN colors, lead CN transfer L537 toward Glenn Yard in Chicago.
