Germany: Hundreds rally for Assange's release in Stuttgart

Around 500 people rallied in Stuttgart to demand Julian Assange's release on Sunday, at an event organised on the day the WikiLeaks co-founder was set to receive the 2020 Stuttgart Peace Prize.
Assange's partner Stella Morris appeared at the event via video-conference, while a politician from the Left Party, as well as a spokesperson from the non-governmental organisation behind the award, 'The Instigators,' also addressed the crowd.
"One can see very clearly in these court proceedings, as it takes place, that it is a political persecution and the whole proceedings are a farce," said Left Party parliamentarian Heike Hansel.
Hansel also complained about the German government's silence on Assange's case, which she attacked as an "extraterritorial persecution of the US judiciary on European soil."
Assange was awarded the prize in July, with the award ceremony set to take place at an event on December, 6, but this has now been postponed to sometime in the spring of 2021 due to pandemic restrictions.
The Australian has been behind bars at London's Belmarsh Prison since he was given a 50-week sentence in May 2019 for breaching his bail conditions to avoid extradition to Sweden on sexual assault allegations. Assange has been kept in custody despite his prison sentence coming to an end, pending extradition proceedings, as he was ruled a flight risk by the court due to his previous absconding.
He faces multiple charges in the US related to espionage, and is next due to appear in court for a remand hearing on December 11.
