Historical Note:
The main characters of the outdoor show are Yagyū Jūbē Mitsuyoshi (柳生 十兵衞 三厳, 1607 – April 21, 1650) and his father, Yagyū Munenori (柳生 宗矩, 1571 – May 11, 1646). Yagyū Munenori was a master swordsman of the Tokugawa shōguns, especially Tokugawa Ieyasu, for whom Yagyū Munenori was also a top counselor. Yagyū Munenori is also famous for officially creating the Yagyū Shinkage-ryū martial art style started by his father, Yagyū "Sekishūsai" Muneyoshi. This martial art style became the official style of the Tokugawa shogunate.
Yagyū Jūbē Mitsuyoshi joined the court of the second shogun, Tokugawa Hidetada, and later became a sword instructor for the third Tokugawa Shōgun, Tokugawa Iemitsu, as his father was getting pretty old at the time. However, even at that time, Yagyū Munenori had frequently been practicing sword fighting with his son Yagyū Jūbē Mitsuyoshi, claiming that "the young man speaks a lot but still has a lot to learn." Legend is that during one of the practices, he sliced his son's eye, and since that day, his son has been wearing an eye patch. However, confirming or denying that is difficult, as the historical records are not very detailed from that time. However, Yagyū Jūbē Mitsuyoshi was pictured in many movies as a one-eye ninja, creating a legend of one-eye-ninja fighting with a plethora of other clans of ninja criminals to bring order and protect the shogunate.
This story likely takes place during Tokugawa Iemitsu as the shogun, after the eye accident, and when Yagyū Munenori was pretty old but still wanted to teach his son new tricks in fighting.
