0:12 - What changes do Brits have to look out for when travelling to Europe?
What do European citizens have to be aware of when travelling to the UK?
These are some of the questions that are being highlighted as Brexit day approaches this December.
Check out these 5 post-Brexit immigration changes you should be aware of at the end of this year.
0:42 - 1. British Nationals Studying in the EU
For British students already studying in an EU member state by the end of December, you should still be entitled to broadly the same ongoing support
as students from that country.
Guidance is under review however if you're starting from January you should contact your prospective EU university to see whether the situation is likely to change.
To study in the EU in 2021, you should start preparing your visa requirements, healthcare and travel insurance.
It's not yet known if the UK will continue in the Erasmus student exchange scheme.
Erasmus programme (European Region Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students) is an EU funded programme that organises student exchanges.
01:29 - 2. British Nationals Travelling to EU states
Starting January 2021, to visit any EU member state, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein – you should be mindful of the following factors:
You need At least six months left on your British passport - except for trips to Ireland, which is part of the Common Travel Area (CTA)
You need Travel insurance with health cover because the European Health Insurance Card will no longer be valid as things stand
Any extra driving documents you might need - depending on where you're going. Some countries require an international driving permit
if taking pets, you need to have Checked with your vet and allow at least four months before you travel - for the latest guidance about taking your pet or assistance dog abroad.
The current pet passport scheme in England, Scotland and Wales - and Pet Travel Scheme in Northern Ireland - will no longer apply
With mobile phones, the guarantee of free-roaming will end, but no UK mobile firm currently plans to bring back the charges
02:23 - 3. Border Control
At border control, British nationals should use a separate lane from EU, EEA and Swiss citizens.
Be prepared to show your return ticket and prove you have enough money for your stay.
Tourists will be able to travel without a visa to Schengen area countries - which include most EU nations and Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein - for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
From 2022, UK nationals must pay for an ETIAS which is an electronic authorisation permit to travel to the Schengen area.
Business travellers will have more to do and may also need a visa.
03:07 - 4. EU Nationals in the UK
If you're an EU citizen living in the UK by 31 December 2020 or from Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland - your rights will remain the same until 30 June 2021.
03:27- 5. Moving to the EU in 2021
From 1 January, free movement of people between the UK and
the EU will end.
If you're already living in an EU state, you will have certain protections under the withdrawal agreement.
But even then, you should check that country's specific rules. You may need to register or apply for residency, get new documents, or meet specific requirements - like having a job.
