Richard Kuakini "Piggy" Kaleohano Eulogy

Aloha,

about this video:
First and foremost my deepest sympathy and respect for the Kaleohano family - Piggy will forever be missed!

This film has been made for a couple specific reasons, one, to preserve the memory of and to honor the man who was known as a Hawaiian music artist and legend in his own right "Richard Kuakini "Piggy" Kaleohano"
The films construct and idea is focused on the preservation for all future generations to come, watch and learn.

The other reason is for those of you, both Hawaiian and Hawaiian at heart who would have liked to have been present to pay your respects but could not due to personal circumstances. The film was made with you in mind, the ones who couldn't make it but really wanted to be there.

The video was filmed "on the fly" with no preset notion or planning of what to film. Keep in mind also the video was filmed with no intentions of disrupting the scripted service or to cause any of the family or friends attending this service any discomfort, this is why no up close casket clips were shot. It was not my intention to disrespect the family or people involved. The video was filmed by hand and without a tripod to be more discreet so not to create any unwanted attention for any of these people as they paid their final respects to the departed. This is why some of the clips in this film are unstable, shaky or even out of focus at times. It was my intention to only document the end of one man's life and his era on film, a man who influenced and touched the hearts of many people in Hawaii. It is my hope you will respect the film and not leave any unwarranted or disrespectful comments in your wake...

As I was the only one there that I could see who was actually filming the event, I do not believe this event will be seen on video anywhere else. I like to believe many of you will appreciate watching what transpired that day and see the film as a valuable piece of Hawaiian music history despite its low quality and its lack of preplanning.
And hey, maybe you going see da kine there...

The preservation of Hawaiian music history, has become a passion for me lately, as I would love to document as many artist as possible, especially rare interviews with the local Hawaiian musical talent that would allow. Time is now ever so crucial as a generation of talented local artist here in Hawaii have been slowly departing. Their stories, simply deserve to be told and heard.

I strongly urge anyone who reads this to consider doing the same when you can and document what you can however you can through video, photos or written interviews of such musical legends before the opportunity is lost forever.

As we are now nearing the end of a 30 to 40 year cycle in Hawaiian music, a cycle that erupted in Hawaii in the 70's and perpetuated itself until now, documenting such stories and past traditions is one way for us all to pay respect and learn from the masters who created it all. It seems as if the new styles of Hawaiian music today rarely touch on the older traditional style as it appears we are now on the cusp or nearing the end of an era in Hawaiian music. I hope for all who see this film it brings you joy rather than sadness, but more so it makes you reflect on a time once abundant with Hawaiian tradition and pure Aloha!

Aloha nui - Boda
