AwesomeBooks - How we work to make bookselling sustainable

AwesomeBooks was born from a love for books: to not see books thrown away when they could still be read and their stories shared.

Books represent empowerment and education, full of wonderful stories fuelling the imagination…creating aspiration. In 2003, having seen charity/thrift stores, bookshops and libraries throwing bin after bin of perfectly good pre-owned books away, AwesomeBooks began collecting them, knowing there was a better way they could be used. After various trials, the business began retailing them online. This model proved successful, allowing more and more books to be diverted from landfill and giving people access to books they could not find or could not afford.

Today, we are a global retailer, processing over 250,000 pre-owned books every day, with nothing going to waste. We stock over 2 million used books at any time and offer over 8 million brand new books, in case we don’t have a pre-owned copy of that book you are looking for.

But wait – it doesn’t end there. Being sustainable for us is not just about re-use and zero waste. What about people who have no access to books? How can we accept a world where so many pre-owned books are being thrown away, yet so many people in the world do not even have a single book in their home? In 2019 we formalised our efforts to fix this and promote literacy under our ‘Buy One-Give One’ scheme: for every book a reader buys from AwesomeBooks.com, we will donate a book to someone who needs it.

Our journey has only just begun. AwesomeBooks is helping to drive a new model of retailing –selling books, creating ways to recover books and continuing to pass them on.
