First, what the study actually found: using AI assistants for essay writing showed a decrease in brain activity during essay writing vs using a search engine or no tools. But here's the caveat: The EEG data was taken *during* essay writing, not after. It's pretty obvious that your brain has to work less while asking AI to write an essay for you vs writing it yourself. What this study doesn't answer is the long-term effects: For example, does using AI to write your essays actually cause your brain to work less on other tasks? Or is it possible that using AI to write your essays frees you up to use your brain for things you actually want to do? This is where nuance and context come in. If you use AI to write your essays and then spend that extra time watching TV, that will absolutely have long-term negative effects on your brain. But let's say you use AI to autodraft all your email replies at work. Depending on your job, you'd save hours every day or week on a repetitive, menial task, and you'd free up time to do work that does require a human brain. In that case, you're using AI to automate the things that don’t need your input so you can do things that require a real human - ie, your actual job that you were hired to do.
