Begin with the End in Mind: Backward Design Your Course

Presenters: Jenny Douglas and Amy Kuhn, West Virginia University Academic Innovation

Courses are often designed by creating a list of topics to cover and then determining activities and assessments. When designing a course "backwards", you identify your learning outcomes first. What do your students need to know or be able to do at the end of the course? After identifying the results you would like to see, then you design assessments and activities to help your learners reach those outcomes. This approach can result in more engaging instruction and ultimately improvement in learning.
