Founded in the 1850s in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Bethlehem Steel rose to prominence in the early 20th century, producing steel for iconic structures like the Golden Gate Bridge and the Empire State Building.

It also played a vital role in both World Wars, manufacturing steel for ships, weapons, and military infrastructure.

At its height, the complex stretched for miles and employed tens of thousands.

But by the late 20th century, foreign competition, outdated production methods, and changing market demands led to a long decline.

Steel production ceased in 1995, and the company declared bankruptcy in 2001.

Today, the towering blast furnaces remain as part of the SteelStacks cultural center, a powerful monument to America’s industrial age and the workers who powered it.
