Giuseppe Sinopoli VPO 1983 | Robert Schumann | Symphony No. 2 in C, Op. 61

This is one of only a couple of commercial recordings that the late and lamented Giuseppe Sinopoli made with the Vienna Philharmonic, said to have been an unhappy relationship between the parties. The recording, coupled with the Manfred Overture https://youtu.be/CfFtovx2hsg , is currently out of print and was, at the time of its release and probably still, largely dismissed or ignored (one of those puzzling industry mysteries). And yet the performance remains an out of the ordinary and gripping interpretation, with Sinopoli clearly underscoring and delineating the tensions, instabilities and agonies inherent in Schumann’s writing (take, for instance, the bone-chilling Adagio) all the while unfolding the work along sweeping Brucknerian vistas. It is the kind of music making that transcends mere, dutiful execution of printed notes.

1. Sostenuto assai (00:23)
2. Scherzo: Allegro vivace (12:17)
3. Adagio espressivo (19:11)
4. Allegro molto vivace (30:30)

Recorded June 1983, Vienna, Musikverein, Große Saal, Wiener Philharmoniker, Giuseppe Sinopoli (Conductor)
