Poise is a quality anyone can have. As an aspiring etiquette expert, you know all children and adults deserve the chance to learn it.

Merriam-Webster describes being poised as “marked by easy composure of manner or bearing.” It means to be comfortable in our skin.

Poise is a quality we practice. Here is the good news, poise can be taught.

Why It’s Important to Teach Poise and How it Translates in Today’s Society
Grace, self-respect and gratitude will always play an important role in our lives. It is who we are and we must continue to teach it. It is how we thrive as a culture and as an individual. Poise is what makes us proud.

How We Teach Poise as Etiquette Experts
Be fully present. This is a gift and it tops the list. In our device ridden world, paying attention has become an abnormality. When we do…boy does it make a difference – for ourselves and those around us. Paying attention is a gift.
Posture. How you walk into a room to sitting in a classroom is crucial. How we compose ourselves matters from the inside out. Teach children how to walk into a room with their shoulders pulled back and down, chin up and to walk as if they know where they are going. Posture is one what we see when someone walks into a room. Posture IS our first impression.
Manage your emotions: Poise means being balanced and although at times this can be a challenge, pause and do the best you can. Managing your emotions is part of maturity.
Respect your belongings: Taking care of your possessions is a sign of poise and caring. This is important to teach children. You can teach them to take care of their clothes, their devices, remember to bring home their backpacks- it is the little habits that add up when teaching poise. This also cultivates self-respect.
Being authentic: Knowing who you are and being purposeful is being poised. Owning your thoughts and behaviors is critical to being poised.
Kindness: Being intentional with how you treat yourself and others. Think before you speak. Practice being empathetic to others circumstances.
Confidence: Of course, this entire list adds up to confidence. When you are poised you are confident.
Be gracious: Poise and gratitude go hand-in-hand. Teaching appreciation is an important part and taught extensively in the Manners To Go curriculum. We all feel better when we express appreciation as often as possible in our daily lives.
