Addiction and Traumatic Brain Injury

The relationship between substance abuse and traumatic brain injury is complex. However research suggests that between 40-60% of substance abuse clients may have a history of brain injury. Additionally, the abuse of illicit substances can place clients at increased risk for suffering a traumatic brain injury which leads to numerous health and psycho-social consequences. This webinar provides information about the relationship between traumatic brain injury and substance abuse, prevalence, assessment, and treatment guidelines.

Presenter: Tad T. Gorske, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist in Pennsylvania and Director of Outpatient Neuropsychology in the Division of Neuropsychology and Rehabilitation Psychology within the University of Pittsburgh Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Dr. Gorske has over 20 years experience in the assessment and treatment of psychiatric and substance abuse disorders in both adolescents and adults. Currently, he specializes in the neuro-psychological assessment and rehabilitation of patients with traumatic and acquired brain injuries.

He has published in peer reviewed journals on topics related to addiction, mental health, neuropsychological assessment, and Motivational Interviewing and he is the primary author, along with Dr. Steven Smith from UC Santa Barbara, of Collaborative Therapeutic Neuropsychological Assessment.
