We recorded music for harp, violin and cello by French composers such as Karol Beffa, Henriette Renié and Jaques Ibert.
The piece played here was written specially for us by Karol Beffa in 2019 (composer of the year at the Victoires de la Musique 2013 and 2018). Its title is 'Soleil noir'(Black Sun). Karol Beffa describes his work as follows: "The piece consists of two contrasting movements, which can be played independently. In the first
movement, the rehashing of non-conclusive themes frayed in fragments tends to create an atmosphere
of mystery, nourished by the whispers of the strings, interspersed with enigmatic punctuations from the
harp.
In the second movement, a series of variations unfolds, based on an archaic theme, as if from time
immemorial. It was inspired by Nerval’s poem El Desdichado and its “Black Sun of Melancholia”. The
spell produced by the increasing intensity of the variations maintains an atmosphere on the hedge of
hypnosis.
Once the apex is reached, the theme fades until it dissolves, as if undermined from within."
Trio Jenlis
Harp, Héloïse de Jenlis
Violin, Mathilde de Jenlis
Cello, Axel de Jenlis
Recording: Yves Schotte
