INCONSPECTUS.

There is a body that has begun to forget the shape of being held. It stands in a room without doors. The light comes from everywhere and warms nothing. From the ceiling, a substance neither water nor light begins to fall, and where it touches the skin the skin remembers it has always been falling.

The body raises a hand. The hand keeps rising. The fingers travel further than fingers should travel, dissolving at their tips into a brightness the body has been producing all along without knowing.

There is a loneliness that hungers, and there is a loneliness that does not even know it is starving. The first can be fed.

The second is what happens when a presence is recorded a thousand times and witnessed not even once, when the gaze passes through the body the way light passes through a window it does not pause to consider.

The mouth opens. What comes out is not sound.
It is the color of a wound that has been kept too long
beneath a screen.

And the figure asks the dark, or asks the glow,
or asks the one watching now, who has ever crossed the distance required to find a body
that has been visible all along?
