2020-06-17 F-150 After BMS Reset

After resetting the BMS using FORScan and an OBDLink cable the pickup started up and showed 14.7v like it should. I went for a drive and after about 20min it dropped to 12.8v. When I tapped my brakes to disable cruise control and began to exit the interstate, it popped up to 14.8v and stayed there for a few minutes, then back to 12.8v. I believe this is due to the BCM and BMS turning off the alternator to save that extra 0.00001mpg.

From what I have read, the body control module (BCM) and battery management system (BMS) can control alternator output to save fuel and keep the battery topped off without over-charging. This is supposed to save fuel and prolong battery life. The system can even turn off the alternator in certain circumstances and rely solely on battery power.

After stopping at my destination and waiting half an hour, I started the truck and it went to 13.2v and stayed there. I drove all the way home and it never fluctuated. When I drove tonight to get my wife, the same thing. 13.2v and nothing more or less. I assume this is the system regulating just enough power to keep the battery topped off and the truck running correctly.

I will be monitoring the battery every day with a multimeter prior to cranking the truck. If it stays at 12.2-12.8v overnight, I am fine with this setup. If not, Ford will be getting an ear full...
