Why Gene Editing for IQ Is Nowhere Near Ready Despite What People Assume

Gene editing for complex traits like IQ, which involve hundreds or thousands of genes, is not on the horizon according to researchers who keep up with labs like the Broad Institute and the Church lab. Even single gene disorders are not fully safe to edit yet because of off target mutations, unintended changes elsewhere in the genome. Timing matters too. In IVF embryos are biopsied around day five when they consist of roughly 150 undifferentiated stem cells, not yet developed into any specific tissue. CRISPR editing would need to happen at that exact early stage because every resulting cell in the body would carry the edit. Getting that right for a single gene with confidence is hard enough. Doing it safely across the hundreds or thousands of genes involved in something like IQ is an entirely different level of difficulty that current technology is not close to solving.⁣
