The Pumas of Monteverde

This family of three moved into an area where several dozen coatis had been foraging (see Gangbangers of the rainforest video). It takes a lot of meat to feed this family. The male came down the trail almost 20 minutes after the female and the baby Puma did. He smelled the mice that were in the log or maybe some larger prey. The Coyote that came later did the same. The young Puma has to learn to hunt and to stay away from the people that will kill it.
It has taken many years of conservation efforts to reduce the hunting pressure on species like the Paca, Peccary and Brocket Deer. These populations have been recovering and consequently so have populations of their natural predators. Through education in the local schools and constant patrolling in the protected areas even more species will recover and a natural balance will return.
