1. Find your rhythm
Intending to become a pediatric neurosurgeon, she took pre-med classes at Stanford University.

2. Do something you're not ready to do
She went on to graduate with honors from Stanford with a BS in 1997 and an MS in computer science in 1999.

3. Balance between innovation and execution
After graduating from Stanford, she received 14 job offers, including a teaching job at Carnegie Mellon University.

4. Ruthlessly prioritize
She joined Google in 1999 as employee number 20 and was the company's first female engineer.

5. Surround yourself with smart people
She started out writing code and overseeing small teams of engineers, developing and designing Google's search offerings.

6. Create a strong culture
She was the Vice President of Google Product Search until the end of 2010.

7. Work in small teams
On July 16, 2012, Mayer was appointed President and CEO of Yahoo!, effective the following day.

8. Share information
In 2014, Mayer was ranked sixth on Fortune '​s 40 under 40 list.

9. Fail fast
In 2014, she was ranked the 16th most-powerful businesswoman in the world by Fortune magazine.

10. Experiment
She actively invests in technology companies, including crowd-sourced design retailer Minted, and wireless power startup uBeam.
